ABOUT

A Career Railroad Operator Takes a New Track

In 1995, Tom Howie left the career that he’d practiced and loved for over four decades to pursue a new opportunity. Howie saw a need in the rail industry for intuitive, easy-to-use software tools that could increase safety and productivity for rail operations.

While developing these tools, Howie also began to offer training and consulting services to other railroad operators, quickly becoming an expert and a reservoir of knowledge in the field. He incorporated RTC in 1997 as a leading consulting firm for the rail industry. Today, RTC continues to expand and to provide training and other custom solutions for rail operations nationwide.

Tom Howie’s family has been connected to the railroad business for generations. Tom grew up in Abbeville, SC, an early hub for railroad operations in the state and is the third generation of four-generations of railroaders in the Howie family.

“My grandfather, father and myself were all locomotive engineers and supervisors for CSX on the same Seaboard line,” Tom says. “Altogether, we’ve been in the rail business since 1899, with almost 150 years of service.”

Howie has 51 years experience in the rail industry, beginning his career in 1966 as a track laborer for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad Company. He worked for CSX Transportation for 29 years in various capacities but mostly as a locomotive engineer, supervisor, instructor and operations support staff member in the Transportation Department.

In 1995, Tom left his position at CSX to start the two companies for which he now serves as president and CEO—Rail Training & Consulting, Inc and RailSoft Systems, Inc. Both companies were incorporated in 1997 and have since been providing crucial safety training, consulting services, FRA records compliance and operating compliance software for short line railroads and plant rail operations.
